Election 2009, Vote for Change

Voting is an important tool to run the democracy in the healthy way. In the other words, it can be said that people decide who will rule their country for five years. What are people thinking about their country? It will be revealed after the 16 May 2009 in the 15th General election after they cast their votes. However, in India people do not know much about their rights. Most of them do not know about their respective area polling booths. I was surprised when I saw today some people in Mumbai city trying to find their polling booths. they have gone out of the home for voting but unfortunately they did not see their polling booths. So, without casting their votes they had to come back home. It is a very serious issue regarding awareness of the polling booths in the city like Mumbai where most of the people live in the juggi and slums. One can argue that nowadays all the details regarding polling booths are available on the internet. It would not be possible for everyone to have access of the internet and search their polling booths. This election is very important for me because it is first time for me. NGOs, Media, colleges and several universities have campaigned for casting vote across the country. Has the campaign affected people to think about their franchise of voting?

  1. Sonu,
First, I disagree with the usage of the word “rule”. I would rather go for Governing the country. I don’t think we need a ruler at this age but someone who can govern the country with his/her wisdom and correct and rational thinking. As for the searching of polling booths, who can we blame or are supposed to blame??? I have no idea. I think like it is the duty of both the party candidate and the voter to know about these details. If you want to vote, then take the initiative to learn about the possible prospects as well.

  2. Even I came across some people who could not find their polling booths. What surprised me that they were 'educated' people speaking and asking directions in English. For the past 20 years, my polling booth has been exactly the same. People from my area all go to the same booth. Which means that these people were possibly voting for the first time!

Some people were having an argument with the polling staff about their names. These are careless people. They should have taken care to check the voters list before the polling day.
